Arsenal prepare new and improved £120 million transfer bid for Monaco star Kylian Mbappe
Arsenal are ready to make Monaco star Kylian Mbappe the world’s most expensive player ever, according to reports in France.
The Gunners were alleged to have made a €100 million (£87m) bid last week, which falls just shy of the figure Manchester United paid for record signing Paul Pogba last summer.
But now L’Equipe are claiming that Arsene Wenger has given the greenlight to an improved bid that exceeds even the offers put forward by Real Madrid and Manchester City for the teenager.
Wenger recently claimed that his side could not compete against sides with the financial might of Real and City, but he will nevertheless sanction a €140 million (£121m) bid.
That figure would eclipse the offers tabled by Real and City, who have topped out at €130m.
Wenger believes Mbappe is destined for the very, very top, and is prepared to break the bank to land him.
The fee would be three times as large as Arsenal’s current record transfer, which stands at the £42.5m they paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil.
Wenger was recently spotted in Nice – just a short drive down the coast from Monaco – with Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis, getting Arsenal fans very excited.
