Early reports said 40 bodies were recovered yesterday after wreckage of the Airbus A320-200 was found. But this was later revised down to three.
A pilot claimed he had seen three bodies in the water still holding hands.
Relatives of the 162 people on board broke down after AirAsia officials revealed the find during a meeting at Indonesia’s Surabaya airport.
Several people collapsed and had to be taken to hospital after seeing TV pictures of a half-naked bloated corpse.

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes, the owner of QPR football club, said his heart was “filled with sadness” after the debris was confirmed as flight 8501.
The plane disappeared on Sunday morning after hitting storms while flying from Surabaya to Singapore.
Among the passengers was British businessman Chi Man Choi and his two-year-old daughter Zoe.
"These look like items that are not usually seen on sea surface."
A tweet from French news agency Agence-France Press's official account read: "#BREAKING Items resembling emergency slide, plane door seen in search for AirAsia flight #QZ8501: Indonesia."
The development came during the third day of the search for the vanished jetliner.
Ships and aircraft from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia are scouring the Java Sea for any trace of the AirAsia plane, which disappeared on Saturday with 162 people on board.
