Baby will be the first grandchild for Bill and Hillary Clinton and comes as the former secretary of state mulls a second bid for the White House in 2016

"Marc and I are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year," Ms Clinton said.

Bill and Hillary Clinton will become grandparents for the first time later this year after their only daughter, Chelsea, announced she is pregnant.

The 34-year-old made the announcement next to a beaming Mrs Clinton, who has often expressed her excitement at the prospect of grandchildren.

"I just hope that I will be as good a mom to my child, and hopefully children, as my mom was to me," Ms Clinton said.

The former first daughter is married to Marc Mezvinsky, an investment banker and the son of two former members of Congress.
